THE BOOK:

Finally someone has written a garden book with priceless information for a sorely tried (and tired) group, those who garden among deer. Dr. Estes is the President of the Deer-Heart College of Deer Gardening, and this is the only book you will need to graduate with flying colors--of roses, that is.

The entire book is a sort of college curriculum on how to garden among deer without hiring a mountain lion. With good science, good humor, and good gardening information, Dr. Estes makes sense of the frustration gardeners feel when deer gobble up their landscapes. She explains what deer really are and why they behave the way they do.

Sections on the Physics of Fence-Jumping, Optimal Foraging Theory, Predator-Prey Systems, Mating Theory, Digestion in Ruminants, Plant Defenses, Why We Have a Deer Problem, etc., comprise the first part of the book. Those are the Lecture Courses, each of which has its own short one-paragraph summary at the end called the Whiff Notes. Thus she arms the gardener with true scientific understanding of the problem.

Then, in the Applied Courses, she gives very specific information to help gardeners have beautiful landscapes which deer cannot destroy. She recommends four primary techniques which she calls Four Legs to Run With™. The Four Legs are based on the science in the theoretical courses. The author includes many photographs of her own garden.

More than 200 kinds of roses and specific techniques for growing them appear in one of the book's largest chapters, called, "Yes! I Promise You a Rose Garden!"

The third large section of the book contains Elective courses about deer--how deer are associated with Shakespeare, a Mayan king, automotive engineering, deer dances, the art and science of fly fishing, myth, legend, films, etc. Three Deer-Heart College faculty film critics rate movies and television shows that depict deer according to how may hooves up or down they deserve.

There are even extracurricular activities, including a romantic date. At the end of the book there is a Deer-Ploma™ from the Deer-Heart College, suitable for framing near a window overlooking the graduate's gorgeous garden.

The book contains hundreds of color photographs.

This revolutionary book was written by a biology professor who faces the deer problem in her own landscape.
